We aim to accommodate more rescues all over South Africa. This project will build additional rehabilitation centre’s for discarded, injured and disabled bunnies.
These will become free educational centres to teach children and curious adults how to care for and treat bunnies, as well as train volunteers and in long term to facilitate potential research on rehabilitation of Lagomorphs.
Free training videos will be produced within the new building/facility to spread knowledge and awareness internationally.
There is currently no more space in animal rescue centres in South Africa, especially for bunnies. If the public report, bring injured, discarded or disabled bunny the rescue centres can’t take them in.
Even the local SPCA in the end must euthanize animals due to space and health concerns. There is a lack of education on how to care for exotic animals like bunnies, because of this people become overwhelmed with their pets/bunnies. People end up dumping them leading to the bunnies getting injured and having no home.
The building expansion project will help to create additional space to take in more disabled and discarded bunnies.
Each building will be able to house 20 enclosures and estimate 30 to 40 discarded or injured bunnies. Each enclosure will provide much needed food and water. Each building will have a medical treatment section to treat wounds and feed bunnies that can’t eat.
At least 5 people can be trained per day with this expansion, and weekly videos will create educational material to spread knowledge.
The Long term Impact
This project will provide a safety and health facility for 40 to 160 sick, discarded or disabled bunnies. It will also help control the population of bunnies, because each bunny will be sterilized, which means potentially avoid breeding of thousands additional bunnies.
Treatment of diseases will also prevent the spread of the likes of EC to other animals. The education and training will reach potential of 260 people per year and from an online training perspective, thousands more.
After the sturdy 2m high fence renewal around the yard, we have started planting natural plants in the area where the bunnies new Habitat will be. This area is about 120sm.
We are planting trees for the bunnies to graze from. The plants are still small, but will grow fast in the coming wet season. We are also saving up for a shade net.
